Throughout history the Ruling Elite have routinely viewed those they ruled with contempt. Makes sense. The little people are putting up with being ruled by you…why NOT hold them in contempt?

Sometimes, of course, the Ruling Elite are stupid enough to EXPRESS this contempt. And when they do so over a long enough period, and let enough of the peasants hear it, then “unpleasant things” sometimes happen.

King Charles the 1st had held the English people in contempt for quite some time, and then Oliver Cromwell came along and explained it to him. Moments before the “explanation” was complete (i.e. Charles was hung) the soon to be room-temperature ex-sovereign gave a dissertation on how the people ought to have NO share in government (“that is nothing appertaining unto them.”). But it is Charles final words that describe . . .
